Optical Transceiver Compliance Certifications

Fiber optic transceivers are one of the key components in modern communication systems. These hot-pluggable devices are in high demand for high-speed data transfer and come in various form-factors such as 10G, 25G, 40G, 50G, 100G, 200G and 400G. Currently, 800G transceivers are in development and should be in the market soon.

An important question which arises in any customer’s mind is how do they know if the transceiver is of good quality and will meet the product specifications provided by IEEE and MSA? An important and quick way to recognize that is by looking at the compliance marks on the transceiver logo or by simply requesting this information from the vendor. As part of these compliances, a product undergoes rigorous testing for reliability and performance measurements. Under certain compliances, the products also undergo a special kind of testing which verifies that the product does not contain environmentally harmful substances which can potentially create pollution or a hazardous situation.

Some common certifications are:

Some compliances are mandatory when selling these optical transceivers in a particular country while some others are accepted globally. When purchasing a transceiver, check the compliance certifications required by your country and make sure your supplier can provide those certifications. Typically, a higher number of compliance certifications indicate that the product has undergone rigorous testing and meets all the criterions successfully.
