Communication is key in military systems, be it on land, air or sea. As military systems become more advanced, fiber optic communication systems have become the norm in modern Navy ships and submarines. Fiber has the advantage of increased security, EMI resistance and high bandwidth over copper.

A major defense contractor approached Vitex for a 2.5Gb/s PIN+TIA and Laser Diode to build a shipboard fiber optic communication system. The components needed to work in harsh environments and demonstrate consistent performance.
Due to the type of application, these devices had to work at temperatures from -40°C to +85°C with a demonstrated history of high reliability. The requirement was for a pigtailed 2.5Gb/s PIN+TIA and a 2.5Gb/s directly modulated laser. Both devices needed to pass rigid Telcordia GR-468-CORE qualification (Reliability Assurance for Optoelectronic Devices). In addition, the products needed to demonstrate field failure rate of less than 50FIT. By having product history that could be traced back to 8 years, we were able to show a random failure rate of less than 50 FIT based on over 70 million devices hours in the field.
Today our customer has hundreds of devices working in this harsh environment without a single failure. Our customer is so pleased with these products performance they are utilizing them for two new programs.
Designed for demanding applications, Vitex fiber optic components have been tested and found reliable in harsh operating conditions. Contact us if you are looking for products for mission critical projects.
